A Month of Waste Reduction and Community Action

November was a month of inspiring activity for NIRN and its members, with a strong focus on European Week of Waste Reduction. We saw incredible efforts to reduce waste, foster collaboration, and support local communities.

At Creggan Country Park, a ‘train the trainer’ session was held in partnership with Tools for Solidarity and Sue Bamford. This hands-on event empowered participants with skills in traditional needlework and sewing machine repair, equipping them to lead workshops in their own communities. Part of NIRN’s Circular Resources Library project, this session celebrated the power of reuse and repair while strengthening ties between our members.

In a heartwarming gesture, over 100 pairs of donated spectacles were handed over to Dan O’Reilly of Newcastle County Down Lions by NIRN network managers Helen and George. These glasses will be sent to Lions Medico France, where they will help those in need worldwide. This initiative highlights how waste reduction can directly benefit lives, offering the gift of sight while keeping valuable resources out of landfill.

We were also thrilled to facilitate a generous donation of used laptops from Connor Consulting to the ABC Community Food Hub. These laptops will support after-school programmes and job search initiatives, demonstrating how reusing resources can have a lasting impact. Thanks to Connor Consulting, ABC Council, and everyone involved for making this possible.

In collaboration with The Playtrail and Creggan Country Park, we spotlighted the power of community fridges to combat food waste and inequality. These fridges not only redistribute surplus food but also foster a sense of solidarity within communities. During European Week of Waste Reduction, we showcased how these practical solutions can make a difference, encouraging others to get involved. We also celebrated the launch of the Zero Waste Champions programme in Northern Ireland. This innovative initiative, funded by the Carrier Bag Levy and developed with Ostrero, is empowering schools across the region to embrace a Circular Economy. Students are learning to reuse, repair, and reduce waste through workshops that inspire action. Schools like Ebrington Primary in Derry are leading the way, proving that the future of sustainability lies in the hands of our young leaders.

Through these efforts, November has been a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and a shared commitment to reducing waste. Together, we are building a more sustainable and equitable future.
