From Toasters to Policy: Representing NI at the 3rd Westminster Repair Café

Putting Northern Ireland on the Map
A personal highlight for George was the opportunity to engage directly with Northern Ireland MPs from all the political parties, particularly the new Green MP, Hanna Spencer, to discuss how we can bridge the gap between grassroots repair and legislative action. Thank you to all the MPs who took the time to listen to the unique challenges and opportunities we face in NI.

It was fantastic to catch up with our own members, Repair Café NI, and to swap insights with Jan Owens from Circular Communities Scotland.

We also heard a brilliant reminder of why we do this from TV presenter Sean Fletcher. He shared the story of his 27-year-old toaster, a wedding present that he recently had repaired. It’s a perfect metaphor for the movement: these items aren’t just “stuff”; they are part of our lives, and keeping them in use is the ultimate act of sustainability.

The momentum is building, and NIRN is proud to be at the forefront, ensuring Northern Ireland’s voice is heard in the heart of Westminster.
