From Rags to Runway: ABC Council Celebrates Sustainable Style

The “Rags to Runway” fashion show served as the grand finale of a five-week Trash Fashion workshop, an initiative spearheaded by the Community Development Department of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (ABC) Borough Council. The project sought to challenge the “fast fashion” cycle by teaching residents how to breathe new life into discarded textiles.

The Creative Journey: From Charity Shops to Catwalk

Over the past month, the 16 participants embarked on a creative exploration of sustainable design. Guided by industry mentors, the group visited local charity shops to source “raw materials” and raided their own wardrobes for forgotten garments.

The workshops focused on a variety of hands-on upcycling techniques, including:

  • Deconstruction & Reassembly: Shredding and slashing old fabrics to create new textures.

  • Artistic Embellishment: Utilising stenciling, embroidery, and patchwork to mask wear-and-tear.

  • Modern Tailoring: Transforming outdated silhouettes into contemporary, wearable art.

“This project isn’t just about the clothes,” noted one of the organisers. “It’s about reconnecting with the history of textile production in Northern Ireland while looking toward a more sustainable future. Seeing the pride on the participants’ faces as they walked the runway in garments they made themselves was incredible.”

Why “Trash Fashion” Matters

With the fashion industry being one of the world’s largest polluters, the ABC Borough Council’s initiative highlights a growing local movement toward circular fashion. By showcasing that “trash” can be transformed into “high fashion,” the program encourages residents to think twice before discarding clothing and to support the local charity shop ecosystem.

“I never looked at a charity shop rail this way before. Now, I don’t see an old shirt—I see a dozen possibilities for a new dress.” — Workshop Participant
