Celebrating Community Resilience at Carrickmacross Toy Library

The final day of our Community Resilience Programme concluded with a visit to Carrickmacross Toy Library, a community space dedicated to positive environmental change and social connection.

Six years ago, the journey began with two passionate volunteers determined to reduce plastic toy waste. Around 90 percent of toys are manufactured from plastic, and many remain difficult, if not impossible, to recycle. Their goal was simple yet ambitious: create a practical, sustainable way for children to enjoy toys while significantly reducing household waste.

Today, that initial concept has evolved into a thriving community asset. The Toy Library now provides:

  • A toy-lending service that actively encourages sharing and reuse.

  • A nappy library offering practical support to families across the community.

  • An educational programme for schools, bringing the lifecycle of toys to life.

  • An open, welcoming gathering space where community members connect and build lasting relationships.

Carrickmacross Toy Library is a prime example of how grassroots dedication can flourish into a multi-faceted resource that protects the environment, aids families, and strengthens local bonds. Seeing community resilience in action served as a powerful reminder of what is possible when people unite around a shared vision.

Our sincere thanks go to the team at Carrickmacross Toy Library, alongside CRNI, Community Finance Ireland, and DAERA, for their continued dedication and support.
