The Circular Communities Pilot Programme

The Circular Communities Pilot programme continued in July, with both the Greencastle Community Association and PRSPR holding meetings to advance local circular economy initiatives. The pilot supports organisations that are not currently members of NIRN, helping grass-roots groups assess community needs, map local assets, and gain direct mentorship and peer-to-peer knowledge from established sustainable projects.

Greencastle Community Association

Following the opening of their new facility in June, Croí An Caisleán Glas – The Heart of Our Community, the Association hosted a pilot training workshop in July to explore ways to “put the ‘Green’ back into Greencastle.” The meeting brought together 11 local residents across multiple generations, including parents, grandparents, Retirees Group members, and classroom assistants to identify viable community initiatives.

  • Book Swap: A local exchange project to keep books in circulation.
  • Parent & Toddler Toy Swap: A pre-loved toy exchange to support local families and reduce waste.
  • Seed Swap & School Partnership: A seasonal project in collaboration with Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School. Association volunteers will work alongside students to demonstrate seed harvesting in autumn and lead planting sessions in spring.

Next Steps & Local Engagement:

  • Specific timeframes and delivery plans will be set at the Association’s AGM in August.
  • Local residents interested in volunteering can contact Fiona Teague at 07813 935 996 or via email at greencastlecommunity@gmail.com.

PRSPR

PRSPR held planning meetings to participate in the pilot framework, focusing on establishing a new Lending Library for the local community.

Next Steps & Mentorship:

  • PRSPR is preparing a list of key operational and setup questions regarding the facility.
  • The Circular Communities team will connect PRSPR with existing lending library operators to gather practical guidance.
  • PRSPR will receive tailored mentorship from an experienced organisation to support the official launch and ongoing operation of the Lending Library.

A key part of the pilot is the opportunity for participating groups to learn directly from organisations with real experience delivering community reuse and repair activities. Mentoring support may include planning advice, operational guidance, volunteer engagement, event delivery support, and ongoing encouragement as activities become established locally.

Examples of activities could include:

  • Community repair cafés
  • Clothing and textile repair workshops
  • Furniture or household item reuse projects
  • Bicycle repair sessions
  • Toy, book, or equipment sharing initiatives
  • Skills-sharing and upcycling workshops

We are looking for community groups that:

  • Are interested in bringing practical reuse and repair activities to their area
  • Want to engage local people in positive community action
  • Can commit time to participate in training, mentoring, feedback sessions, and pilot activities
  • Are interested in helping shape a model that can support other communities in the future
