Earlier this month, our Community Network Manager, Katie O’Donnell, attended the official launch of ‘Crumbs’ Golden Ale, a brilliant collaboration between the Liberty Consortium and Walled City Brewery.
The story began when The Playtrail’s Community Fridge found itself with a massive surplus of bread. Rather than letting it go to waste, the team led by Mark and Rachel asked a bold question: Can we turn this food waste into something wonderful?
Supported by a grant from Hubbub, young adults at The Playtrail transformed the leftover loaves into breadcrumbs, which the experts at Walled City Brewery then brewed into a crisp, delicious golden ale.
This project is a masterclass in the circular economy:
Tackling Food Waste: Turning surplus bread into a premium local product.
Giving Back: For every pint sold, £1 is donated to the Foyle Foodbank.
Empowerment: Highlighting the incredible skills and creativity of local young adults.
A huge thank you to the Playtrail team for hosting such an inspiring event. It is the perfect example of how a simple, sustainable idea can create a massive social impact.
