Larne Community Fridge is a dynamic hub of community activity. From its origins as a social media hub during Covid, it has grown to encompass a range of initiatives including an Edible Community Garden, Seed Library, Book Library, Herbal Tea Bar, and orchard in Larne Town Park. Collaborating extensively within the local community, we excel in networking and connecting communities, playing a pivotal role in establishing various projects and groups. Together, we helped make Larne a Safe Community in 2022.
Our Community Fridge, garden, and orchard operate on a circular theme, rescuing surplus food from local businesses and redistributing it through the fridge. Open several times a week to everyone, our ‘take what you need’ approach aims to reduce waste and promote environmental stewardship in an inclusive manner.
Within the garden, most structures are reused or donated, fostering a sense of sustainability. We host plant shares, seed swaps, and offer opportunities to learn about growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs. It’s a tranquil space for connection and learning, complete with a book library and chatty bench for book lovers. Our online group, ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Larne,’ extends our reach even further.
In addition to our environmental efforts, we provide repurposed dog waste bags along the promenade and in the town park, encouraging others to follow suit. Join Larne Community Fridge in building a more sustainable and connected community!
